Bosnia and Herzegovina: EPBiH posts €23.3 million loss in first half of 2025 despite revenue growth

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s state-owned power utility, EPBiH, reported a net loss of approximately 23.3 million euros in the first half of 2025, a deeper deficit compared to the 13.7 million euros loss recorded during the same period in 2024.

During the first six months of 2025, the company generated total revenues of 381 million euros, marking a 32.7 percent increase year-on-year. However, this gain was offset by a 34.4 percent rise in total expenses, which reached 404 million euros.

A significant drop in electricity production contributed to the negative financial results. EPBiH’s hydropower plants generated 121.8 GWh less than expected, while thermal power plants underperformed by 651.4 GWh due to coal supply shortages. The shortfall in domestic production forced the company to purchase additional electricity from the market, with procurement costs far exceeding budget projections.

For comparison, EPBiH ended 2024 with a net loss of 29.4 million euros. That year, the company saw revenues rise by 9.9 percent to 654.8 million euros, while total expenses fell by 10.3 percent to 685.5 million euros.
