Bosnia and Herzegovina, EPBIH failed to secure concession for Podvelezje 2 wind farm

Bosnian state-owned power utility EPBiH previously expressed interest in the construction of Podvelezje 2 wind farm, however, the Government of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton has accepted the initiative of another legal entity to acquire concession rights at that location.

With the aim of overcoming the situation, EPBiH initiated and held several meetings with the relevant Minister of the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton. However, the implemented activities did not lead to a result that would enable EPBiH to submit a self-initiated offer for the award of the concession, which is in line with the company’s obligations from the decisions of the Federal Government.

In the spring of 2021, EPBiH commissioned a wind farm with 15 wind turbines at the Podvelezje location. An investment worth 77 million euros, it represented a significant increase in the share of electricity production from renewable sources for the company, within the system of the mentioned company. Podvelezje wind farm has installed capacity of 48 MW and, since its commissioning, it has produced 126.17 GWh of electricity.

Besides investing in wind power, EPBiH plans to build a number of solar power plants, most of which will be located on ash dumps of the company’s coalmines and thermal power plants. Total installed capacity of planned facilities should be around 225 MW.
