Bosnia and Herzegovina: Electricity and energy production declines in October

Gross electricity production in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) for October 2024 totaled 472 GWh, marking a 20.7% decrease compared to October 2023, when production reached 595 GWh. The decline in production was driven by a reduction in output from both hydropower plants and coal-based thermal power plants, while wind farms accounted for a small increase in share.

Breakdown of electricity production:

  • Hydropower plants: Contributed 53.86% of total gross electricity production, generating 256 GWh.
  • Thermal power plants: Produced 42.59% of the total, amounting to 178 GWh.
  • Wind Farms: Contributed 3.55% of gross production, generating 17 GWh.

Net electricity production for the month stood at 451 GWh, with a notable drop in coal-generated electricity.

Energy imports and exports:

Electricity imports surged significantly in October 2024, amounting to 212 GWh, compared to just 38 GWh in the same month last year. In contrast, electricity exports also increased, reaching 111 GWh, up from 59 GWh in October 2023.

Fossil fuel and mineral production:

  • Brown coal (Lignite): In October 2024, brown coal production reached 337,146 tons, a 2.6% decrease from the 346,105 tons produced in October 2023.
  • Lignite: Production dropped by 17.8%, with 115,308 tons produced in October 2024, compared to 140,279 tons in October 2023.
  • Coke: Production experienced a sharp 45% decline, with only 36,836 tons produced in October 2024, down from 67,021 tons in the same month last year.

Overall, the energy sector in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina faced significant challenges in October 2024, with lower electricity generation and reduced production of key fossil fuels compared to the previous year. This reflects ongoing shifts in energy production and a reliance on increased imports to meet demand.
