Bosnia and Herzegovina: BiH will have to introduce CO2 emission fees

Director of the Energy Community (EnC) Secretariat Janez Kopac said that Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) will have to introduce carbon dioxide emission fees for thermal power plants in order to bring the price of electricity closed to the market one.

Kopac noted that the price of electricity produced at coal-fired thermal power plants in BiH is unrealistically low, and given that these plants do not pay CO2 emission fees like in the EU, coal-based electricity production is actually subsidized by the state.
In addition, the EU is helping with the transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy which is less harmful for the environment and help combat the climate change. Through the pre-accession instruments, the EU provided 90 million euros in support, of which 82 million through direct investments and 8 million for the adoption of necessary regulations in this field.

Recently, the European Commissioner for European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn criticized the fact that BiH is still considering the construction of coal-fired facilities such as the unit 7 at TPP Tuzla, with very little work being done on the construction of wind farms and solar power plants.
