Bosnia and Herzegovina advances Southern Gas Interconnection with Croatia

BH-Gas, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Industry, is actively progressing on the Southern Gas Interconnection project, aimed at strengthening energy security and ensuring a stable natural gas supply for the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH) and the country as a whole.

Recognized as a strategic infrastructure initiative by the Federal Government, the project’s primary goal is to link the gas transportation networks of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) and Croatia. This connection will grant BiH access to the European gas transportation system and the open natural gas market, playing a key role in supply diversification and energy independence. As part of BiH’s Energy Strategy through 2035, the interconnection will enhance the country’s resilience in the energy sector.

In February, the Gas Pipeline Act for the Southern Gas Interconnection came into force, establishing a legal framework that streamlines administrative procedures for securing approvals and permits, including urban planning consent.

Currently, efforts are focused on forming a commission to conduct expert evaluations required for obtaining urban planning approval from the Federal Ministry of Spatial Planning. The commission will consist of representatives from the Federal Ministry and cantonal ministries from Central Bosnia, Canton 10, Herzegovina-Neretva, and West Herzegovina.

Once these approvals are secured, work will commence on the main implementation plan for the gas interconnection and its associated infrastructure, in accordance with legal requirements. Authorities at all levels, along with private sector stakeholders, are encouraged to cooperate in facilitating the necessary permits to advance the project.

BH-Gas remains fully committed to the realization of this strategic initiative, with the ongoing support of the Federal Ministry of Energy, Mining, and Industry, as well as the Federation Government.
