BiH: TPP Ugljevik 3 project suspended

The Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction, and Ecology of the Republic of Srpska decided to halt the procedure for issuing an environmental permit for the project for the construction of coal-fired thermal power plant Ugljevik 3.

The Center for the Environment announced that the suspension of the administrative procedure will remain in effect until the decision of the Supreme Court is made.

The Ministry filed an extraordinary legal remedy against the judgment of the District Court in Banja Luka, which, in December 2022, annulled the decision approving the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) study for this project due to violations of international legal sources.

Although the reconsideration of this judgment by the Supreme Court usually does not affect ongoing administrative procedures, the Ministry decided to suspend the process of issuing an environmental permit for TPP Ugljevik 3 after the annulment of the EIA study and the third cancellation of the environmental permit for the same project.
