Azerbaijan and EU strengthen energy cooperation through gas and renewables expansion

Azerbaijan and the European Union have expressed their readiness to strengthen cooperation in the supply of natural gas and renewable energy, according to a statement from Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Energy.

The first meeting of the working group established between Slovakia and the EU to address gas supply issues for Bratislava took place in Brussels. Azerbaijan was represented by Deputy Minister of Energy Orkhan Zeynalov, along with Elshad Nasirov, Vice President for Investments and Marketing at the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR). On the European side, the discussions included Cristina Lobillo Borrero, Head of the Directorate-General for Energy at the European Commission, and Denisa Saková, Slovakia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy.

According to the statement, representatives of the European Commission and Slovakia underscored Azerbaijan’s role as a key and reliable energy partner. The participants expressed their commitment to joint efforts in enhancing cooperation in both natural gas supply and green energy development.

During the meeting, Azerbaijan presented a report outlining its gas potential and additional export opportunities to Europe. The discussions also covered the necessary conditions for increasing supply volumes and expanding infrastructure. Zeynalov reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s commitment to fostering dialogue with European partners and contributing to regional energy security.

Azerbaijan currently has gas supply agreements with ten European countries: Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, Croatia, North Macedonia (under a memorandum), and Slovakia (short-term). Among these, Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria have signed long-term contracts with fixed supply volumes, while the other agreements do not specify purchase volumes.
