Albania: Electricity production drops in 2024, imports surge to meet rising demand

According to data published by the Albanian Institute of Statistics (INSTAT), Albania’s electricity production in 2024 totaled 5,692 GWh, marking a 10.9% decrease compared to the previous year’s output of 8,796 GWh.

The decline in production also affected electricity exports, which fell to 2,335 GWh in 2024 from 2,842 GWh in 2023. Meanwhile, electricity imports increased significantly, rising to 2,669 GWh from 1,992 GWh in the previous year.

Hydropower plants operated by the state-owned power utility KESH generated 4,085 GWh in 2024, reflecting a 20.3% drop compared to 2023. However, the country’s renewable energy sector saw significant growth, with solar power plants generating 507 GWh—5.6 times higher than in the previous year.

Despite the overall decline in domestic electricity production, Albania’s total electricity consumption, including network losses, increased by 3.7% in 2024, reaching 8,170 GWh. The rising demand, coupled with reduced hydropower output, contributed to the country’s increased reliance on electricity imports.
