Agios Efstratios: Greece’s first energy-independent island powered by renewables

Agios Efstratios, located in the northeastern Aegean, is poised to become Greece’s first energy-independent island, fully harnessing renewable energy sources. The island is currently in the trial phase of an innovative energy autonomy project that utilizes wind turbines, solar panels, and battery storage to fulfill all its electricity and heating requirements.

Energy generated on the island is distributed through a medium-voltage network, while excess heat is stored in central heating systems to provide warmth to local buildings. Given its remote location, self-sufficiency in energy is crucial for Agios Efstratios. On October 5, the system successfully operated for 2.5 hours, marking a significant milestone in Greece’s commitment to climate neutrality.

This initiative is part of a broader effort, with plans for similar renewable energy projects on other islands in the region.
