Solar energy surges in Iberia and Germany, while wind power declines expected across Europe

During the week of May 5, solar photovoltaic (PV) energy production rose significantly in the Iberian Peninsula and Germany. Portugal led the growth with a 62% increase, followed by Spain with a 26% rise. This growth was largely driven by a rebound in production following a blackout on Monday, April 28, that had impacted both countries. Germany continued its positive trend for the second consecutive week, albeit with a modest 1.4% increase. In contrast, solar PV production declined by 13% in both France and Italy.

Portugal achieved a new all-time high in solar PV generation on Tuesday, May 6, producing 26 GWh. Meanwhile, Italy recorded its second-highest solar production for a May month, generating 139 GWh on May 10.

Looking ahead to the week of May 12, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts further increases in solar PV output in Spain and Germany, while Italy is expected to see continued declines.

In terms of wind energy, production rose for the second straight week in France and Germany, with increases of 52% and 17%, respectively. However, the Iberian Peninsula and Italy experienced declines in wind generation. Portugal saw the steepest drop at 46%, followed by Italy with a 12% decrease and Spain with an 8.5% drop.

France recorded its highest wind energy output for a May day in the past four years on Monday, May 5, with 216 GWh produced.

For the upcoming week of May 12, AleaSoft forecasts a general decline in wind energy production across the major European markets, AleaSoft reports.
