Croatia: JANAF should consider acquiring Russian stake in NIS to strengthen business synergy

Croatian Minister of Economy, Ante Susnjar, has proposed that the state-owned oil transportation company JANAF explore the possibility of acquiring the Russian stake in the Serbian oil company NIS. According to Minister Susnjar, such a move would foster a natural business synergy, with JANAF acting as a cooperative partner to other stakeholders, unlike some other companies that have been the subject of public debate.

While there have been no formal reports confirming discussions between JANAF and NIS regarding this proposal, it is known that NIS is JANAF’s largest client. In January of the previous year, JANAF signed a significant agreement with NIS to transport 10 million tons of oil until December 2026. This contract was hailed as a record-breaking achievement and reinforced JANAF’s position as a crucial player in both the Croatian and regional energy sectors. The deal also ensures the company’s stability and profitability for the foreseeable future.

NIS has been a long-term client of JANAF, and the oil transport volumes between the two companies have seen substantial growth in recent years. Under a contract signed in December 2022, set to last until the end of 2024, JANAF is responsible for transporting 6.2 million tons of oil. In 2022, the contract covered 3.2 million tons, and in 2021, it amounted to 2.75 million tons.

JANAF recently announced that, since December 2022, it has exclusively been transporting non-Russian oil to Serbia through its system.
