Romania overtakes Netherlands as EU’s largest gas producer, boosting energy security and lowering prices

Romania has overtaken the Netherlands to become the largest gas producer in the European Union, achieving this milestone as early as the second quarter of 2024. Energy Minister Sebastian Burduia announced that the country had reached a record 2.3 billion cubic meters of gas production. This achievement is particularly significant given the volatile energy markets and the EU’s growing focus on energy independence.

In response to these developments, the Romanian government is planning major investments in energy infrastructure, with a projected budget of 600-800 million lei in 2024 aimed at expanding gas production capacity. The ongoing Russian aggression in Ukraine has spurred EU countries to find alternatives to Russian gas, further highlighting Romania’s growing role in regional energy security.

Romania’s expanding production capabilities position it as a key energy player in the region. The country plans to increase its gas production even further, particularly through the exploitation of deep-water reserves in the Black Sea. By 2027, Romania aims to double its current production, a move that could have significant effects on domestic energy prices and the broader regional energy landscape.

This increase in gas production is expected to have positive economic effects for Romania, particularly in the form of lower energy costs for consumers. Romania currently boasts some of the lowest gas prices in the EU, and this growth in local production is likely to drive further price reductions.
