Serbia: NIS launches 610 kW solar power plant at Pancevo refinery

A solar power plant with a total capacity of 610 kW (550 kW connected to the grid) has been built and is now operational on the rooftops of buildings at the Pancevo oil refinery. The plant is expected to produce 656 MWh of electricity annually.

The solar power plant consists of 1,053 photovoltaic panels, each with a capacity of 580 W, and 13 inverters with a combined nominal power of 500 kW. The electricity generated will be used to meet the energy needs of the Pancevo refinery.

Construction of the solar plant began in April 2024 and was completed on the rooftops of five buildings within NIS’s processing complex. Installing solar panels in an industrial setting posed a complex technical challenge but represents a significant step toward greening the refinery’s production. NIS employed the latest technologies to optimize and monitor production while ensuring the highest levels of operational safety.

This project is part of NIS’s broader strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and demonstrates the company’s commitment to diversifying its operations toward green energy. The total investment in the project was over 320,000 euros, and it is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 700 tons annually.

This initiative is just one of many steps NIS is taking to develop renewable energy sources. In the previous year, solar power plants were commissioned at the company’s offices in Novi Sad, its oil product warehouse, the drinking water production facility in Jazak, and 45 petrol stations across Serbia. NIS plans to continue expanding its solar and other green energy projects in the future.
