Greece: Solar power sector set for continued growth with projected 3 GW increase in 2025

Significant investments are driving the growth of solar power in Greece, with the installed capacity expected to increase by 2.5 to 3 GW in 2025, reinforcing its dominant position in the country’s renewable energy sector. Stelios Psomas, an energy consultant at the Hellenic Association of Photovoltaic Companies (HELAPCO), emphasized that data from 2024, along with projections for 2025, showcase the industry’s resilience and its ability to navigate energy market challenges while maintaining robust growth in solar investments.

In 2024, new solar installations added 2.5 GW, bringing the sector’s total installed capacity to 9.6 GW. Notably, 400 MW of the new installations were dedicated to self-consumption—100 MW from residential units and 300 MW from commercial units. This boosted Greece’s total self-consumption capacity to over 850 MW, marking a record-breaking year and achieving in one year what previously took several years. This growth trend is expected to continue into 2025, with Greece’s self-consumption capacity projected to reach 1.2 GW.

Psomas also highlighted strong revenues from commercial solar projects in 2024, noting that the market price for solar energy on the electricity exchange surpassed both tariff rates and bilateral Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs). This further indicates the growing profitability and competitiveness of solar energy in Greece’s market.
