Croatia: Electricity trading on CROPEX sees strong growth in December 2024

In December 2024, a total of 1,053,095.8 MWh of electricity was traded on the Croatian energy exchange CROPEX, marking a 13.1% increase compared to November. Of this, 848,707.9 MWh was traded on the day-ahead market and 204,387.9 MWh on the intraday market. The total traded volume in December was 16% higher than in the same month the previous year.

The average daily base price on the day-ahead market in December was 136.3 euros/MWh, which is 5.9% lower than in November. The average euro-peak price also decreased, reaching 162 euros/MWh, a 5.2% drop compared to the previous month. On the intraday market, the average price was 140 euros/MWh, which represents a 7.9% decrease from November.

CROPEX had 32 participants on the day-ahead market, the same number as the previous month, with 29 of them also active on the intraday market. The average daily traded volume on the day-ahead market in December was 27,377.7 MWh.

Launched on March 11, 2016, in collaboration with Nord Pool, Europe’s leading electricity exchange, CROPEX is co-owned by the Croatian electricity transmission system operator (HOPS) and the Croatian electricity market operator (HROTE). The intraday market was introduced in April 2017, and on June 19, 2018, the day-ahead market was successfully coupled with MRC markets via the Croatian-Slovenian border through a joint project of Croatian and Slovenian transmission system operators and power exchanges.
