Europe: December solar and wind energy production see significant increases

In the week of December 16, solar photovoltaic energy production saw an increase across most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. The German market experienced the largest rise, up by 54%, while the Spanish market recorded the smallest increase at 8.7%. The Italian and French markets saw growth rates of 17% and 13%, respectively. The Spanish market marked its fifth consecutive week of increases, while Italy continued its upward trend for the second week in a row. In contrast, the Portuguese market saw a slight decline of 2.9%.

During the week, the Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian markets all set new records for daily solar photovoltaic production in December. Spain achieved its highest daily production on Sunday, December 22, with 96 GWh, surpassing the previous record of 90 GWh set on December 10. Portugal reached its peak on Saturday, December 21, with 13 GWh, beating the previous December record of 12 GWh from December 9. Italy’s highest daily photovoltaic generation was recorded on Saturday, December 21, with 47 GWh.

Wind energy production also increased across all major European markets during the third week of December, following declines in the previous week. Germany recorded the largest increase, up by 118%, followed by Portugal at 87%, and France at 81%. The Spanish and Italian markets showed the smallest increases, rising by 44% and 52%, respectively.

Looking ahead to the fourth week of December, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts a decrease in wind energy production in most major European electricity markets compared to the previous week, except for Italy, AleaSoft reports.
