North Macedonia: MEPSO terminates contract with Energoinvest for 400 kV interconnection project with Albania

The North Macedonian electricity transmission system operator MEPSO has announced the termination of its contract with Bosnian company Energoinvest for the construction of a 400 kV electricity interconnection with Albania. MEPSO stated that the decision was due to the contractor’s failure to meet its obligations and its requests for additional payments, which hindered the resolution of the project.

The original contract, valued at 17.2 million euros, was signed in February 2020 with a completion deadline of 30 months, which expired on May 30, 2023. However, MEPSO reported that only 24 out of the planned 269 pillar foundations were completed, and 51.2% of the required equipment had been delivered by the deadline.

MEPSO further stated that it will soon issue a new tender to select a contractor to complete the interconnection project. Currently, Albania is the only neighboring country without an electricity interconnection with North Macedonia.
