Romania unveils updated National Energy and Climate Plan aiming for ambitious renewable energy goals

The Romanian Ministry of Energy has released the second updated version of the National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP), which introduces 89 new policies and measures designed to enhance the share of renewable energy sources, significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and implement innovative solutions across various economic sectors.

The updated plan sets more ambitious targets than those previously outlined. Key objectives include a commitment to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions by 85% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels and to achieve climate neutrality before 2045, advancing the previous target date of 2050.

Additionally, Romania aims for 38% of its gross final energy consumption to come from renewable sources by 2030, with wind, solar, and biomass energy identified as the primary drivers of this transition.

Energy Minister Sebastian Burduja stated that updating the NECP represents a significant step in Romania’s fight against climate change. He emphasized the country’s commitment to becoming climate-neutral by 2045, contributing to a safer, more competitive, and greener future for both Romania and Europe.
