Greece: DESFA unveils updated 2024-2033 development plan with increased budget and new projects

This week, Greek natural gas transmission system operator DESFA presented its updated development plan for the period from 2024 to 2033, inviting public consultation. The new plan, which features a total budget of 1.37 billion euros, reflects an increase from the previous budget of 1.27 billion euros and includes 72 projects, with 69 slated for completion within the first three years.

Among the updates, the plan introduces three new projects with a combined budget of 18.98 million euros. The previous ten-year plan (2023-2032) allocated 458 million euros for new projects, including 13 million euros for network improvements and maintenance and 430 million euros for expanding system capacity.

Notably, a hydrogen project in the western Macedonia region has been removed from the updated plan due to funding shortfalls from the EU’s Horizon Europe program. In response, DESFA has added a new initiative focused on the Amyntaio-Komnina pipeline, which will be adapted to transport hydrogen in the region.
