North Macedonia: EBRD lends 26.4 million euros to MEPSO

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD)
is providing a loan of up to 26.4 million euros to Macedonian Transmission System Operator AD, the state-owned electricity transmission system operator in North Macedonia.
The project focuses on strengthening the transmission network in the country’s southeast and integrating renewable energy sources into the national power system. The loan will fund the construction of a new 400/110 kV substation near the village of Miletkovo, Gevgelija, its connection to the existing 400 kV transmission line from SS Dubrovo to SS Thessaloniki, and the reconstruction and upgrade of the existing 110 kV transmission line from SS Valandovo to SS Strumica 2 and SS Strumica 1. This will enable the connection of 1.2 GW of renewable energy sources and increase the reliability of the electricity supply in the region.
The project amounts to 34.7 million euros. In addition to the EBRD loan, the Western Balkans Investment Fund (WBIF) provided a 7.6 million euro grant and the Climate Investment Fund (CIF) contributed a 0.5 million euro grant.
