Romania: Engie acquired 80 MW wind park

Engie has completed the acquisition process of an operational onshore wind farm with a capacity of 80 MW, previously owned by the EnerCap Capital Partners Group and EP Global Energy. Located in Chirnogeni, Constanța County, the wind farm benefits from the favorable wind conditions specific to the region and is predicted to generate an annual net production of approximately 180 GWh, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 90,000 households.

This investment marks an important moment for ENGIE, bringing the total installed capacity of wind and solar energy production in Romania to 202 MW. Additionally, with this new acquisition, the company will nearly double its existing wind energy production capacity and will contribute, along with other renewable energy assets, to the reinforcement of the company’s position in the green energy production segment.

“By acquiring the Chirnogeni wind farm, ENGIE is taking a major step in its current development plans in the field of renewable energy, consolidating its position on the Romanian market, which has an exceptional potential in renewable energy sector. This strategic investment represents another important step towards achieving the objectives of reaching an installed capacity of 1,000 MW of renewable energy by 2030”, said Cristian Buzan, Deputy General Manager of ENGIE Romania.

ENGIE Romania Group already owns and operates 2 wind farms, with a total installed capacity of 98 MW, located in Brăila and Galați counties, as well as 4 photovoltaic parks with a total installed capacity of 24 MW in Arad, Buzău, Harghita, and Teleorman counties.

Furthermore, in 2023, the company made the investment decision related to the construction of two greenfield solar power plants. One of them is located in Ariceștii Rahtivani, Prahova County, with a total capacity of 37.2 MWp, and the second one, with an installed capacity of 9.3 MWp, is in Gemenele, Brăila County, on the land where ENGIE already operates a wind farm. Once finished, this project will merge the two existing parks into one of the first hybrid power plants in Romania, using renewable sources.
