SEE region: Greece-Bulgaria power transmission line to be completed in next two months

The second electricity interconnection between Greece and Bulgaria should be completed in next two months. The 151 kilometers long electricity interconnection, aimed to increase cross-border trades, will connect two substations – in Nea Santa (Greece) and in Maritsa region (Bulgaria).

The Bulgarian section of the interconnection, which is 121 kilometers long, has already been completed. It will increase  transmission capacity in Greece-Bulgaria direction to 1,400 MW and to 1,700 MW in the opposite direction.

The project will facilitate further RES development in northern Greece and also enable two Greek power plant projects currently being developed to export their production with greater ease. The consortium of GEK Terna and oil refiner Motor Oil is developing an 877 MW gas-fired power plant in Komotini in northeastern Greece, while power utility PPC and gas company DEPA Trade have teamed up for an 840 MW gas-fired power plant in Alexandroupoli, close to the future LNG terminal.
