Bulgaria, Electricity generation dropped by 16 % in 2023

According to the data published by Bulgarian electricity transmission system operator ESO, production of electricity in Bulgaria in the period between 1 January and 19 March 2023 has decreased by 16.07 % compared to 2022 and reached 10.82 TWh.

Bulgaria’s electricity consumption also decreased in 2023, by 5.89 % reaching a total of 9.41 TWh. Surplus electricity amounted to 1.42 TWh in 2023, 51.2 % less than in 2022.

Baseload power plants (coal, nuclear) produced a total of 9.35 TWh of electricity in 2023, which is 15.9 % less than in 2022.

The share of electricity produced from renewable energy sources (RES) in the transmission network rose by 15.42 % to 393 GWh, while RES share in the country’s distribution network increased by 0.88 % to 466.2 GWh.
