Greece, Ptolemaida V to remain in reserve after 2028

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited the new lignite-fired thermal power plant Ptolemaida V, the last such facility to be built in the country, stressing the strategic importance of the new plant for Greece’s energy security amidst the energy crisis.

The Greek Government and Public Power Corporation (PPC) have reevaluated the use of lignite as a mean of electricity generation, so that it can serve as an energy shield in conditions of crisis, such as the current one. PM Mitsotakis said that the plant will become a strategic reserve unit after the total coal phase-out in 2028.

Ptolemaida V was designed in 2007 and its construction started in 2015. It started trial operation last autumn and the launch of commercial operation is planned for early March. The cost of the 660 MW power plant was around 2 billion euros.
