Greece, Electricity producers pay extraordinary taxes of 370 million euros

Greek electricity producers owe the state about 367 million euros in extraordinary taxes introduced by the government in Athens as part of a support package to mitigate the effect of rising energy prices, Finance Minister Christos Staikouras said.

He added that this amount is based on the increase in the gross profit margin of electricity producers in the period from October 2021 to June 2022 and that the deadline for payment is December 30 of this year. However, this is not the final amount, and after the final calculations, it is expected to exceed 370 million euros.

The minister said that from July to the end of November 2022, electricity producers on the stock market generated additional income of 2.57 billion euros, of which about 980 million euros refer to the profits of producers based on natural gas, lignite and hydropower, and 1, 59 billion euros represents the extra profit of producers of renewable energy sources.

Based on the above, excluding OIE, electricity generation companies in Greece maintained a total profit of 1.35 billion euros.
