Bulgaria, Unit 6 of NPP Kozloduy taken offline due to non-nuclear issues

Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy said that it has taken offline its 1,000 MW unit 6 due to a non-nuclear issue with cooling system of one of the generators. The units was taken offline in the evening hours of Saturday, 29 October.

The statement from the plant said that there is no deviation from normal radiation levels at the plant and work is being done to restore the unit to regular functioning.

Unit 6 was just reconnected to the network earlier that day, following the month-long scheduled overhaul which included measures aimed at increasing safety and ensuring the long-term operation of the unit, as well as reloading the unit with fresh nuclear fuel.

The unit is expected to be reconnected to the network on 3 November.

Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet-built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
