Bulgaria, NPP Kozloduy has reconnected 1,000 MW unit 5

Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy said that it has reconnected 1,000 MW unit 5 in the evening hours of 22 June, following a short downtime due to a non-nuclear technical fault.

The statement from the company said that the downtime was due to the activation of electricalvprotection in the morning of 22 June, as a result of increased voltage caused by a malfunction in the excitation system of the unit’s generator.

All systems and equipment have been confirmed to be functioning normally and the unit is gradually increasing its output following the reconnection to the network.

Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet- built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
