Greece, Government is considering limiting the retail price of electricity

The government in Athens is considering introducing a ceiling on the retail price of electricity, but the decision could depend on the outcome of the next EU summit scheduled for May 30th and 31st.

The Greek government will be ready to act independently if EU leaders fail to make decisions regarding the energy market at the next summit, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis pointed out at the economic forum in Delphi last week.

This would include additional support packages to help consumers meet sharply rising energy costs due to the ongoing energy crisis, which is showing no signs of slowing down.

It is estimated that between 2 and 4 billion euros will be needed to cover energy subsidies in Greece in the next 12 months. Government sources state that the value of the support package has yet to be specified, but they described the amount that will be needed as “significant”.

Part of the funds could be provided through the Recovery and Resilience Instrument.
