Macedonia, ESM has been buying electricity at tenders without specifying the price that it pays

For some time, North Macedonian state-owned power utility ESM has been buying electricity at tenders without specifying the price that it pays. For example, last week, it bought 7,200 MWh for the delivery on 17 and 18 November, without disclosing any information about the prices.

For previous three emergency tenders ESM has published the price at which electricity was bought from producers and traders. It is speculated that the prices on the fourth tender ranged between 250 and 300 euros/MWh.

CEO of electricity transmission system operator MEPSO Kushtrim Ramadani said earlier that ESM lacks about 70,000 MWh on the daily level, while other suppliers lack about 10,000 MWh. He warned that the water levels at ESM’s accumulations are alarmingly low, which could further jeopardize the security of supply in the country.
