Romania, Strengthening of nuclear cooperation with Canada

Romanian Minister of Energy Virgil Popescu and Canadian Ambassador to Romania Annick Goulet have signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Romanian Ministry of Energy and the Canadian Department of Natural Resources on strengthening cooperation in the field of Civil Nuclear Energy. The memorandum was signed in the presence of Romanian Prime Minister Florin Citu.

The signed MoU strengthens the cooperation between Canada and Romania in the field of nuclear energy because the Canadian industry has an exceptional experience in CANDU projects and has already successfully completed renovation works and new projects for the construction of CANDU units. At the same time, considering the
experience in CANDU projects, the Canadian partners will be involved in the nuclear energy projects in Cernavoda and in those in the civil nuclear energy sector in Romania.

Minister Popescu noted that in the project of modernization and construction of new nuclear reactors, in addition to the partners from the USA and France, Romania is now joined by the Canadian partners, with whom it has a very good and long collaboration in this field. By signing this MoU, both parties express their common interest in strengthening and further developing cooperation in nuclear energy projects. And not only that: Romania and Canada will try to work together to implement new technologies, which are the future of green energy.

In June, the Romanian Parliament has adopted the draft law on the ratification of the agreement between the Romanian Government and the Government of the United States of America on the cooperation on NPP Cernavoda projects, which includes the reconstruction of unit 1 and the construction of two new units. In October 2020, Romania and the United States have initialized the intergovernmental agreement on the cooperation in the civil nuclear industry field, which was subsequently notified and endorsed by the European Commission.

The ratification of the Agreement between the two governments represents the general framework for the continuation and implementation of strategic nuclear projects assumed by Romania in the energy strategy and in Integrated Energy and Climate Plan as a pillar of achieving the decarbonization targets, the energy security and
the efficient transition to clean energy.
