Romania: Modernization of Iron Gates I HPP

Electricity producer Hidroelectrica said that it has signed the procurement contract for the modernization of the electrical installations related to the hydromechanical equipment at the Iron Gates I hydropower plant.

The works, initially estimated by Hidroelectrica at 12.5 million euros without VAT, was awarded to a consortium consisting of DSD Noell GmbH and UTI Facility Management, with the offer 11.5 million euros. Romelectro submitted the other offer at the tender launched last October. The statement from the company said that the contract continues the series of major investments in the power plant, after the modernization of the SCADA systems in the control rooms for both HPP Igron Gates I and II and the modernization of the monitoring and diagnosis system at HPP Iron Gates I.

Iron Gates I or Djerdap I is one of the largest hydropower plants in Europe and the largest dam on Danube. The Romanian side of the HPP has six 194.3 MW turbines, while Serbian side has four 171 MW and two 201 MW turbines. Annual electricity generation is about 5.4 TWh on the Romanian and 5.65 TWh on the Serbian side.
