Romania: Plan for OMV Petrom’s SPP in Dolj

OMV Petrom already operates Romania’s largest gas-fired power plant – 860 MW combined cycle plant in Brazi. This would be its first investment in solar energy in the country, but not the first in renewable energy.

The largest Romanian oil and gas company OMV Petrol, a part of Austrian OMV Group, plans to build a solar power plant in Dolj county. The plant’s power output would be 111 MW, the largest in the country.

The company plans to build a plant on the location of the former Doljchim, a fertilizer manufacturer closed in 2010. The investment in the plant would exceed 80 million euros. OMV Petrom already submitted the project to the Ministry of Economy and Energy in order to partially finance the project via EU funds, which would cover 50 % of the investment.

In 2017, Transeastern Power (now Jade Power Trust) announced that it has completed the acquisition of 45 MW Dorobantu wind farm from OMV Petrom. OMV Petrom announced in July same year that it has signed an agreement on the sale of its Dorobantu wind farm to Transeastern Power B.V. for 23 million euros, and the deal was approved by the Competition Council in October. The statement from OMV Petrom said that the company’s strategy as an integrated oil and gas group is to concentrate on core activities. More specifically, in Downstream Gas, the focus is placed on consolidating the leading position on the gas market, on maximizing the benefits of the integrated gas and power business model and on regional expansion. Wind power activities are not part of the strategic directions, the statement concluded.

OMV Petrom said that Dorobantu wind farm represented less than 1 % of its operating result and assets, while the power output accounted for around 3 % of the group’s total production.
