Romania: Second largest gas producer in EU

The gas production volume extracted in Romania, the second largest producer, decreased by 10 % and gas production in the European Union fell by 19 % in the first half of this year, according to a report by the European Commission (EC).

Total EU production reached 30.5 billion cubic meters of gas in H1 2020, compared to 37.7 billion cubic meters in the same period last year.

The Netherlands, the largest gas producer in the EU, extracted 14 billion cubic meters, 25 % less than in the same period in 2019, when it produced 18.7 billion cubic meters. Romania in second place produced 4.6 billion cubic meters of gas, 10 % less than in the first half of last year, when the output was of 5.1 billion cubic meters. In third place, Germany extracted 2.6 billion cubic meters of gas, compared to 3 billion in the first half of 2019.

In the second quarter alone, total EU gas production amounted to 15 billion cubic meters, which is 14 % less than in Q2 2019. In the second quarter, the Netherlands produced 6.8 billion cubic meters of gas (- 16 %), Romania extracted 2 billion cubic meters (-17 %), followed by Germany (1.3 billion) and Italy (1 billion).
