Following the completion of planned annual maintenance works on October 24., Bulgaria’s sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy has successfully reconnected its 1,000 MW Unit 6 to the electricity network, the company announced.
The statement from the company said that, during the downtime, besides reloading fresh nuclear fuel, testing of the reactor’s equipment and systems was carried out along with other measures aimed at maintaining the long-term operation of the unit. Unit 6 was taken offline on 22 September for regular annual maintenance. During the downtime, unit 5 operated at full capacity.
Originally, NPP Kozloduy had six reactors, but four older 440 MW reactors were shut down in 2007 due to nuclear safety concern of the European Union. The plant currently operates two Soviet-built 1,000 MW reactors, unit 5 and unit 6 which were commissioned in 1987 and 1991 respectively.
