South Korea and Bulgaria expand energy cooperation with new memorandum

South Korea’s Trade, Industry and Energy Minister Dukgeun Ahn and Bulgaria’s caretaker Minister of Energy Vladimir Malinov have signed a new memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance their bilateral energy cooperation. This updated agreement builds on the original 2019 pact and broadens its scope to include liquefied natural gas, energy storage and supply chains, alongside the previously covered areas.

The revised MoU includes more detailed provisions for nuclear energy collaboration, addressing aspects such as the construction of new nuclear power plants, their continued operation, decommissioning, radioactive waste management, small modular reactors, and workforce training.

Minister Ahn highlighted the strong prospects for further cooperation, noting Bulgaria’s active investment in clean energy sources such as nuclear power and renewables, and Korea’s push for energy security and carbon neutrality through carbon-free energy solutions. He also introduced South Korea’s Carbon Free Energy Initiative, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality using a range of carbon-free energy sources, and invited Bulgaria to support and participate in this global effort.
