Solar and wind energy production trends in European markets

During the week of March 17, solar photovoltaic energy production increased across several major European electricity markets compared to the previous week. This reversed the previous downward trend, with Germany experiencing an 89% increase, Italy seeing a 32% rise, and France registering a 26% growth in solar production. However, in the Iberian Peninsula, production declined, with Portugal and Spain witnessing decreases of 18% and 7.8%, respectively, reversing their previous week’s gains.

Notably, in the third week of March, Germany, France, and Italy set new records for daily solar photovoltaic energy production for the month of March. On Tuesday, March 18, Germany generated 324 GWh, while France produced 120 GWh. Italy reached its peak two days later, on March 20, with 121 GWh of solar production. These figures were last recorded in August and September 2024.

Looking ahead to the week of March 24, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting predicts an increase in solar energy production in Spain, while Germany and Italy are expected to experience a decline, reversing the trends from the previous week.

Meanwhile, wind energy production also saw significant growth in most major European markets during the week of March 17. Portugal and Germany registered the largest increases, with wind power generation rising by 121% and 93%, respectively. France and Spain followed with increases of 55% and 44%. However, Italy was the exception, recording a 37% decline in wind energy production, reversing its previous upward trend.

A significant milestone was achieved in Portugal on Wednesday, March 19, when the country set a new all-time record for daily wind energy production, reaching 112 GWh.

For the upcoming week of March 24, AleaSoft Energy Forecasting anticipates a shift in wind energy production trends. Wind generation is expected to decline in Germany, France, Spain, and Portugal, while Italy is projected to see an increase, AleaSoft reports.
