Slovenia: Elektro Ljubljana secures €50 million loan from EIB for network modernization

Elektro Ljubljana, Slovenia’s largest electricity distributor, has secured a €50 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to modernize and strengthen its distribution network.

Urban Likozar, CEO of Elektro Ljubljana, highlighted the growing need for investment in the distribution network due to increasing electrification and the integration of renewable energy sources. The funding will support significant upgrades to the network, including the renovation and construction of medium- and low-voltage overhead lines, underground cables, power transformers, and substations. The project will also involve the installation of smart meters and advanced components to enhance energy efficiency, as well as new electric vehicle charging stations.

EIB Vice President Kyriacos Kakouris praised the collaboration with Elektro Ljubljana, noting that it reflects the EIB’s commitment to supporting infrastructure development and addressing the critical needs of Slovenia’s energy sector. The expansion and modernization of the distribution network are essential for advancing the country’s electrification efforts and integrating renewable energy sources, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, and heat pumps.
