Slovenia: Electricity production decreased to 12 TWh in 2022

Electricity generation in Slovenia in 2022 reached 12.2 TWh. That is 15% lower than in 2021. At the same time, consumption decreased by 4% to 13.4 TWh.

Last year, Slovenia covered only 70% of its needs through domestic production. Domestic production of electricity amounted to 10.2 TWh, which is 17% less than in 2021. Domestic production contributed 9.5 TWh of electricity to the system, compared to 11.7 TWh the previous year.

The production decline occurred in a particularly challenging year for the energy sector. In addition to market turmoil due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the year was marked by severe drought and extremely low hydrology, major problems with lignite supply from Velenje coalmine, which led to a temporary shutdown of TPP Sostanj and extensive maintenance of NPP Krsko, which resulted in it being disconnected from the network for over a month.
