Slovenia: EDF and Westinghouse compete for contract to build second unit at Krško nuclear power plant

Slovenian Gen-Energija has announced that French energy giant EDF and US-based Westinghouse are now competing for the contract to build a second unit at the Krško nuclear power plant. This comes after Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) withdrew from the selection process, opting out of both the feasibility study and the bidding for the new unit’s construction.

Currently, a Technical Feasibility Study (TFS) is underway, with both EDF and Westinghouse conducting their own studies. The total cost of these studies is estimated at 8.3 million euros, with results expected by the third quarter of this year. KHNP informed Gen-Energija that it would not submit a bid for the feasibility study and would withdraw from the bidding process, citing an assessment of the current business environment and a shift in its strategic priorities.

Back in October 2023, Gen-Energija CEO Dejan Paravan had identified Westinghouse, EDF, and KHNP as the three potential contractors for the second unit. The company anticipates that adding a 1,000 MW unit will require an investment of around 9.3 billion euros.

Currently, the Krško nuclear power plant operates one Westinghouse pressurized light-water reactor with an installed capacity of 700 MW.
