Slovenia: Borzen holds 2026 Sostanj power auction with falling electricity prices and rising carbon allowances

The Slovenian electricity market operator Borzen has held a new public auction for electricity generation at the Sostanj thermal power plant in 2026, in accordance with legislation on transitional coal exit financing.

Approximately 350,000 MWh of baseload electricity was offered, divided into eight lots. For the two lots covering year-round delivery, Gen-i submitted the highest bid at just over 103 euros per MWh. The remaining six lots, covering supply from January to March and from October to December 2026, were mostly won by Gen-i (five lots) and one by NGEN, with prices ranging from 113.3 to 114 euros per MWh. Seven companies participated in the auction, including five domestic and two international firms.

In addition to electricity, Borzen also auctioned emission allowances needed for TPP Sostanj operations. Of the eight lots, HSE secured two at the lowest price, D.Trading won four, and multinational trader Trafigura took the remaining two. The clearing price ranged from 77.9 to 79.3 euros per allowance, each granting the right to emit one ton of CO2 under the EU trading scheme.

Compared to Borzen’s previous spring auction, electricity prices were lower this time, while carbon allowance prices increased. In May, electricity had cleared between 117 and 119 euros per MWh, whereas allowances were priced between 74 and 75 euros.
