Serbia, US Bechtel interest in HPP Djerdap 3 project

The President of US construction company Bechtel Stuart Jones said after the meeting with Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy Zorana Mihajlovic that the company is interested in examining the possibilities for cooperation with Serbian authorities in the field of energy, especially on the project for the construction of pump-storage hydropower plant Djerdap 3.

Jones said that Bechtel is interested in financing the feasibility study for the Djerdap 3 project.

Minister Mihajlovic said that the Djerdap 3 project offers a lot of opportunities for cooperation, as it would be the first hybrid pump-storage hydropower plant in the region, offering 2,400 MW in hydro installed capacity, plus additional 400 MW in wind and solar.

Previously, Bechtel expressed interest in the construction of HPP Djerdap 3 and three large- scale wind farms in Serbia, projects with combined worth of some 2 billion euros.

Project company Energoprojekt originally developed the idea for construction of peak pump storage HPP on Danube back in 1973. According to original plans, the HPP should be built in four phases. During the first phase, the HPP should have power output of 600 MW and annual electricity production should stand at 2 TWh. The outputs during the next three phases should be 1,200 MW/3.15TWh, 1,800 MW/5.2 TWh, and 2,400 MW/7.6 TWh, respectively.
