Serbia: TPP Kostolac B secures comprehensive environmental permit for next decade

The Ministry of Environmental Protection has granted the Kostolac B coal-fired thermal power plant, operated by the state-owned power utility EPS, the most comprehensive environmental protection permit available. Effective from August 15, the B1 and B2 units of TPP Kostolac B have been issued an Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) permit.

According to EPS, this achievement underscores the success of their investment projects aimed at enhancing environmental protection within the thermal sector. The permit, valid for 10 years, outlines the conditions for the plant’s operation with respect to environmental standards, ensuring compliance with the Law on Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control.

TPP Kostolac B is equipped with a flue gas desulfurization system, a wastewater treatment plant, and facilities for the disposal of ash, slag, and gypsum. The final stages of commissioning the Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction (SNCR) system, which will further reduce nitrogen oxide emissions, are currently underway. All environmental protection technologies implemented at the plant align with the best available techniques as recognized by relevant EU standards (BAT/BREF).

In February 2023, EPS also secured an IPPC permit for its Novi Sad Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHPP), which uses natural gas to produce electricity and heat. The process for obtaining similar permits for the TENT complex and TPP Kostolac A is ongoing.
