Serbia: Power utility EPS completes overhaul of Kostolac B unit B2

Serbia’s state-owned power utility, EPS, has announced the successful completion of the overhaul of Unit B2 at the Kostolac B thermal power plant. The 350 MW unit has been reconnected to the network following the major maintenance work.

The next phase involves reconnecting Unit B1, which is scheduled for its major overhaul in the second half of September. This will conclude the maintenance season for the Kostolac complex. The overhaul of Unit B1, the first major one since its revitalization in 2014, began in May and aims to enhance the unit’s safety, reliability, energy efficiency, and environmental performance.

Repairs and upgrades to Units A1 and A2 at the Kostolac A thermal power plant were completed earlier in the season. EPS General Director Dusan Zivkovic assured that the overhauls and revitalizations are progressing as planned and that everything will be prepared for the winter season to ensure a stable electricity supply. These repairs are part of EPS’s broader investment strategy, which includes the revitalization of its only pumped-storage hydropower plant, Bajina Basta.

Despite facing drought conditions, EPS has managed to maintain a reliable electricity supply during extreme temperatures. Summer electricity consumption was about 15% higher than in previous years, while hydroelectric production fell by approximately 30% compared to 2023, due to severely unfavorable hydrological conditions. Most watercourses are operating near their biological minimum.
