A new coal mining project is being planned in Mazgos, a village approximately 15 kilometers from Dimitrovgrad. The detailed regulatory plan for the Mazgos deposit, which is open for public review until 7 October, covers 21.9 hectares and includes nearly 200 land plots, primarily agricultural fields, meadows, orchards, and pastures.
The Dimitrovgrad Municipal Assembly approved the preparation of the plan in 2024. The initiative comes from the local company Vukovic Benz and focuses on land at the edge of Mazgos. The area includes verified coal reserves in the Cutuci deposit, located in the eastern part of the Mazgos basin. These reserves extend eastward from the village toward the Bulgarian border, covering 554,871 square meters.
Of the 21.9 hectares included in the plan, approximately 12 hectares are designated for coal extraction, four hectares for landfill, and five hectares for protective green zones.
The plan also sets out environmental protection requirements. The investor is required to conduct detailed analyses of the mine’s impact on local flora and fauna, including areas within the ecological network, as well as assess potential risks to groundwater, surface water, air, and other environmental components. Measures for drainage and water protection must be implemented during exploitation to prevent contamination of surface waters.
