Serbia: Lafarge to invest €110M in innovative cement plant near Obrenovac, utilizing ash from Nikola Tesla B power plant

Lafarge Serbia is planning to construct a new cement plant in Ratari, near Obrenovac, which will utilize 1 million tonnes per year of ash from the nearby Nikola Tesla B power plant as a key raw material for cement production. This €110 million investment represents a significant milestone as it will be the first cement plant in Serbia built adjacent to a power plant specifically to use ash directly from the source. The project aims to tackle the country’s ongoing issue of ash accumulation in dumps.

Dimitrije Knjeginjić, CEO of Lafarge Serbia, explained that “Fly ash cannot be used in the cement or concrete industry, or in many other industries, without prior processing. This is precisely what the Ratari plant will focus on. We will grind, classify, and select 1 million tonnes of ash annually to produce new construction materials.”
