Serbia: EPS installs first wind turbine at Kostolac wind farm, paving the way for sustainable energy transition

Serbia’s state-owned power utility, EPS, has announced the installation of the first wind turbine at the Kostolac wind farm, with assembly of the remaining turbines to continue as weather conditions permit. The wind farm, which will feature 20 turbines, has a total capacity of 66 MW, with each turbine generating 3.3 MW. It will also include a substation and distribution facility.

The equipment for the project is supplied by Siemens Gamesa, and the wind farm is expected to produce around 187 GWh of electricity annually, enough to power approximately 30,000 households. The turbines will stand 179 meters tall, with each tower reaching 117 meters and blades measuring 62 meters in length.

The Kostolac wind farm will be the first wind energy facility operated by EPS. Located on reclaimed land from decommissioned coal mines, this project aligns with a common practice among international energy companies. It marks a significant step in Serbia’s energy transition, reducing reliance on coal and promoting sustainable development. The farm is expected to be fully commissioned by mid-February 2025.
