Serbia: EPS completes testing of new B3 Unit at Kostolac B

Dušan Živković, General Director of Serbia’s state-owned power utility, EPS, announced that the new B3 unit at the Kostolac B thermal power plant successfully passed tests on October 6. The utility is now in the process of conducting warranty tests, with the unit’s official handover expected soon.

Živković highlighted the significance of this project in relation to the construction of the Bistrica pump-storage hydropower plant, which is crucial for ensuring the stability and further development of renewable energy sources. He also mentioned that EPS is actively working on solar power initiatives, aiming to develop solar facilities with a total capacity of 1 GW in partnership with a strategic collaborator.

Additionally, he noted the successful revitalization of existing hydropower plants, stating that the full upgrade of the Bajina Bašta pump-storage facility is anticipated to be completed next year. EPS aims to ensure that 80% of its hydroelectric capacities remain operational and secure for the next 30 to 35 years. Concurrently, the utility plans to revitalize its thermal power plants over the next two years, ensuring that 75% of these facilities can produce electricity reliably for the next 10 to 15 years, until further upgrades are possible.
