Serbia, Cooperation in the energy field with Romania

Serbian Minister of Energy and Mining Zorana Mihajlovic discussed with her Romanian counterpart Virgil Popescu cooperation in joint energy infrastructure projects and the possibilities of gas routes and suppliers diversification.

Minister Mihajlovic stressed that Serbia wants to work together with Romania on the realization of hydropower plant Djerdap 3 project, which is one of the most important projects that Serbia has in its new investment cycle. The construction of this pump-storage HPP is of regional importance, crucial for the balancing of new renewable energy capacities. She said that Serbia has already held talks with companies interested in the project, but it is also important that Romania would be part of such a big project.

She reminded that Serbia is currently building Nis- Dimitrovgrad gas pipeline, namely its section of the interconnection with Bulgaria, which will enable the country to receive the gas from the LNG terminal in Greece and from Azerbaijan, but the plan is to build gas interconnections with other neighboring countries, including Romania.

Connecting Serbia and Romania by a gas interconnection is a potential joint project and, this year, the project-technical documentation should be completed. The possibilities of the construction of an oil pipeline from the oil fields in western Romania to Serbia have also been discussed, given that Romania is the biggest producer of oil and gas in Europe.
