Serbia and Azerbaijan set to collaborate on gas-fired power plant near Nis

Serbian Minister of Mining and Energy, Dubravka Djedovic, has announced that the construction of a gas-fired power plant near Nis in southern Serbia is a project of strategic importance. A memorandum of understanding with Azerbaijan regarding this project is expected to be signed soon. Minister Djedovic discussed the initiative with Azerbaijan’s Deputy Minister of Economy, Anar Akhundov, and a delegation from the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR).

Minister Djedovic emphasized that the next steps in the joint venture will be determined through ongoing dialogue between the involved ministries and energy companies, including EPS, Srbijagas and SOCAR. She highlighted that this project is vital for ensuring baseload electricity and strengthening energy supply security. It also marks a significant advancement in the strategic partnership between Serbia and Azerbaijan, which began in 2023 with the initiation of gas deliveries from Azerbaijan.

Serbia’s Energy Development Strategy through 2040 identifies the construction of the gas-fired power plant near Nis as a viable project. The plant is proposed to have a capacity of 150 MW for electricity generation and 100 MW for heat production. The total estimated cost of the project is 250 million euros.
