SEE region: Turkey to export gas to Hungary

Turkey signed a natural gas export agreement with Hungary, which will be the first European country that is not one of Turkey’s neighbours to which it will export natural gas.

The agreement was signed between Turkish public pipeline operator BOTAS and Hungarian MVM CEEnergy. Turkey will begin natural gas shipments via pipeline to Hungary in 2024.

Both countries agreed on the development of cooperation on the use of Turkey’s vital liquefied natural gas (LNG) infrastructure and the natural gas storage facilities of the two countries within the framework of common interests.

Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Peter Szijjarto said that Hungary will buy 275 million cubic meters from Turkey during the spring and summer of next year. Turkey also agreed with Bulgaria on the export of natural gas in January. That agreement envisages an annual export of 1.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Bulgaria.
